Preventing Slip & Falls

Slip and fall accidents can lead to very serious, even fatal, injuries. Even when we are being as careful as possible, accidents can still happen. Still, taking preventative measures in certain types of places and situations can definitely reduce your risks of a slip and fall accident.

Here are 5 major causes of slip and fall accidents that you should be aware of:

1. Wet floors: Those slippery when wet signs are just put out for decoration. This is a REAL WARNING that you should heed. Wet floors should be completely avoided in businesses and at home if at all possible.

2. Bathroom bathing: Bathtubs and showers can be very tranquil places, but also can be very dangerous. Bathroom accidents are a prominent cause of slip and falls. Use slip proof shower and bath mats, safety rails and extreme caution if at all possible you are showering or bathing.

3. Low & poor lighting: When you can’t see where you’re going or if there is something unseen in your path, that can be extremely dangerous. Try to avoid poorly lit areas or bring additional lighting with you. Flashlight apps are also a useful tool in these situations.

4. Stairwells: Stairwells, especially poorly maintained ones, can often lead to bad falls. Take your time and don’t run up or down stairwells if you do not absolutely have to. Also, use the handrail to help you keep your balance.

5. Uneven sidewalks & concrete: Raised or uneven concrete can easily cause even the most coordinated person to trip and fall. Carefully keeping an eye on your path and avoiding poorly maintained sidewalks can help reduce your risks.

Thanksgiving is such a truly special time of year. From the beauty of the leaves turning colors to the extra time we get to spend with friends and family, it is something to genuinely appreciate. But between busy work schedules and Black Friday sales, it can be easy to loose focus on what is most important.

Here are 3 things you may want to do this Thanksgiving to ensure you don't loose the meaning of the season...

  1. VOLUNTEER LOCALLY: Get involved in the local community by volunteering. There is nothing like bringing some cheer and charity to someone in need.

  2. REACH OUT TO FAMILY: If there is a family member that you miss or haven't talk to in a while, reach out to them. You would be surprised how much that may mean to them (and you).

  3. TAKE NOTE OF ALL YOU HAVE: Take some time to really reflect and take  note of all you have to be thankful for. Get up Thanksgiving day and everyday with gratitude on your heart.

Happy Thanksgiving from The Foster Firm!

Pedestrian safety is so important, but often overlooked. On the busy streets of Metro Atlanta, everyone worries about car wrecks, yet constantly ignore pedestrian dangers. All car accidents don't just involve other cars. Pedestrians are at risk all the time from being hit by a vehicle or injured from unsafe conditions around them. Here are some tips to help reduce your risk of injury as a pedestrian.

1. Always Use Crosswalks: Never cross in the middle of the road. Only cross the street using crosswalks. If the intersection has pedestrian crosswalk signs, follow them strictly.

2. Make Eye Contact: If you aren't 100% positive a car sees you crossing the street or in a parking lot, make eye contact with them. Be sure the driver knows you are there and your proximity to their vehicle.

3. Pay Attention To Your Surroundings: Don't stare down at your phone, listen to loud music with earphones or be distracted by other people nearby. Know who and what is around you at all times.

4. Wear Bright, Reflective Clothing At Night: Nighttime can be very dangerous for pedestrians. Be sure that you are as visible as possible when walking.

Car accidents are literally everywhere in Metro Atlanta. Many of them even end in serious injury or fatalities. It is important to be proactive when it comes to staying safe on the road. Reducing your risk of a car accident is important no matter how experienced of a driver you are.

Here are 3 safe driving tips that may help you stay safe on the road:

1. STAY OFF YOUR PHONE: Cell phones have become a huge distraction for many drivers. Turn your phone off if at all possible. If you are using the navigation through your phone, silence the ringer and text alerts so you can stay focused.

2. TAKE A DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE: I know it may sound cliché, but they really can help. These types of courses can update you on new driving laws, dangerous driving trends and better prepare you to deal with reckless drivers.

3. KEEP YOUR VEHICLE WELL MAINTAINED: A poorly maintained vehicle has much more of a chance of breaking down. Tire blow outs, transmission failure and poorly maintained windshield wipers are just a few of the vehicle issues that can lead to serious car accidents.

How do you know which personal injury attorney to hire? Personal injury lawyers seem to be everywhere. You see them on TV and hear them on the radio. They always seem to say the right thing, but how do you know who to trust? When the time comes to choose a personal injury attorney you need to know what to look for. Here are some things to consider when it comes to selecting a personal injury attorney:

When you are seriously injured, you feel upset and vulnerable in additional to actual physical pain as well. The last thing you need to add to your problems is a lawyer that sees dollars signs when they look at you, rather than seeing you as a real person with serious emotional, physical and financial needs that need attention. Compassion cannot be underrated. When your attorney truly cares about you, that will translate into how hard they will work for you to win your case and get you the settlement you deserve.

Is your attorney willing to give you one on one personal attention or will you just be pawned off on a low level associate or secretary whenever you need help or have questions? Having a personal injury attorney who will take the time to consult with you and represent you personally can make all the difference in the world. You want to feel confident that you will have someone to depend upon that knows the law and will fight to protect your rights.

Does your attorney have real hands on trial and settlement experience? Can they layout a history of a real cases and cash awards that they have won? If they are vague or avoid these types of questions, this is not the personal injury attorney for you. An experienced personal injury attorney is critical to winning your case.

The Foster Firm knows personal injury law and has a track record of impressive awards. We care about our clients and work hard on their behalf. Unfortunately car accidents are a common occurrence in Metro Atlanta. You will see everything from small fender benders to deadly multi-car collisions on our roads. In many cases, you may not even know you are injured until well after the accident. This is why it is so important to immediately retain an attorney after a car accident. It doesn’t make you an opportunist or greedy to hire a lawyer, it makes you smart.

Here’s 4 reasons you need a car accident attorney…

UNFORESEEN INJURIES: Many injuries manifest well after a car accident. An experienced attorney will be sure that you receive the right type of medical treatment and follow up. This will help to ensure that you will be compensated fully for all of your injuries.

UNINSURED DRIVERS: Uninsured drivers are all around us. Collecting money for repairs and/or injuries from an individual rather than an insurance company can be a difficult task. A skilled lawyer knows how to vigorously collect what you are due.

DETERMINATION OF FAULT: Determining fault in an automobile accident is not always black and white. Fault may lie on both sides but not evenly, obscure traffic laws may apply and evidence at the scene needs immediate preservation, which are all reasons why you need a good attorney to help you find the justice and compensation you deserve.

INSURANCE COMPANIES: Insurance companies often have no interest in doing the "right thing". They are in the business of making profits and that can mean that they will not offer you the full compensation you deserve. You need an attorney who will not back down from the big insurance companies.

If you were in a car accident in the Metro Atlanta or College Park area, contact us. We will fight until you get the compensation you deserve!
